Welcome to episode 8 of the Mind Tilt podcast.
Daniel Johnson, Jr, self-proclaimed social media enabler, spoke with me this week. We discussed all things community, specifically, how a community manager needs to continually fight for the users.
Daniel has a deep passion for connecting strangers and promoting the richness of personal stories. This driving force for Daniel is clearly evident in everything he does from his early days of daily phone calls during his commute to weekly lunch meetups to founding New Media Cincinnati. Daniel and I discussed his learnings with New Media Cincinnati during this week’s conversation.
Here is what we discussed:
- Beat up the lizard brain. Daniel has directly and indirectly changed the lives of many people in the greater Cincinnati area. (Thanks to the web he has helped others outside of the Cincinnati area) What many people do not know is that Daniel did not want to originally start this group. The reasons are tucked away into the podcast, but he succumbed to his passions and not the lizard brain.
- Connect with the connectors. Daniel is infamous for engaging people that help others. His secret is that he actively seeks change agents, not lazy, unmotivated and unengaged people. New Media Cincinnati is a grassroots community that helps people find each other and promote positive change.
- Cultivate your list and do not spam. Daniel is constantly growing his contact list. He leaves a sign-up list at all his events, he exchanges contact information with new and inviting people during every opportunity. The goal is to help him help others and not pitch his latest project. Does your community promote this similar action?
- Be searchable and findable. Your community should be easy to find. Do not spam, but be easy to be found and engage with at the user’s level, not at your level. It is about the user, not you. See point 2 for further insight.
- Test content. You should constantly provide the most beneficial content to your community. In order to do so, you must ask them–quantitatively and qualitatively.
- Give. Give. Give. The unstated goal for Daniel through New Media Cincinnati is to give his time, give his energy and give his resources (relentlessly). This is infectious throughout the New Media Cincinnati group–listen to my discussion with Michelle Beckham-Corbin.
Enjoy the show.
